A world-class academic event returns to Latin America

About the Congress
The World Economic History Congress (WEHC) is an international and interdisciplinary event held every three years, with economic history at its core. The congress attracts not only economic historians but also scholars and professionals from the social sciences, humanities, and natural and life sciences.
The theme of the World Economic History Congress, Montevideo 2028 is “Global Power and Conflicts”. This theme highlights some of the most pressing issues facing humanity today and builds on key topics explored in previous congresses, such as “resources” and “equity and sustainability challenges”.

We look forward to welcoming you to Montevideo in July 2028!
Why Montevideo & Uruguay
Montevideo, the southernmost capital city of South America, celebrated the 300th anniversary of its foundation in 2024. Established as a stronghold in 1724 amidst disputes between the Spanish and Portuguese empires over control of the northern strip of the River Plate, the city received its first settlers from the Canary Islands in 1726.
Uruguay will commemorate its 200th anniversary in 2028. The country was declared an independent state in 1828, as a diplomatic resolution to the conflict between the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata (later Argentina) and the Brazilian Empire.
Today, Uruguay is currently the fullest democracy in South America and one of the best-ranked in the world. Renowned for its commitment to transparency, Uruguay holds a prestigious position in global transparency rankings, sharing the 16th spot with countries such as Japan and Belgium.
